Ottawa, ON (December 18, 2009)–The Interagency Panel on Research Ethics announces the release of the revised draft 2nd edition of the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS) for further public comment.
The complete revised draft 2nd edition of the TCPS is now available.
In December 2008, the Panel proposed a major revision to the 1st edition of the TCPS (1998) in keeping with its mandate to ensure the Policy is a living, evolving document. From December 2008 to June 2009, the Panel received significant feedback on the draft, both orally and in writing. Panel members participated in 58 events attended by approximately 1,800 people in 17 cities. The research community submitted over 1,000 pages of feedback. The Panel has considered all of the comments received and has incorporated many of them into this revised draft.
The Panel is now offering this second comment period to provide the public with a final opportunity to provide feedback on the policy statement before the draft is submitted to the three federal agencies – Canada Institutes on Health Research (CIHR), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) – in the Spring of 2010.
Chapter 9, “Research Involving Aboriginal Peoples in Canada,” was released in November 2009, in advance of the rest of the Policy, in light of the substantial changes made to this chapter and in response to requests made by a number of individuals and groups in the Aboriginal community and the research community at large. Some changes have been made to Chapter 9 since its November release. To compare the November 2009 version of Chapter 9 with the December 2009 version, visit Chapter 9 Comparison.
