Research Requiring ReviewThe TCPS requires that all research involving human subjects under the jurisdiction of, or conducted by members of, an institution receiving funds from one or more of the three federal research agencies undergo ethics review by a REB. A REB is a multidisciplinary committee established by an institution to undertake the ethics review of research projects affiliated with that institution. The REB ensures that ethical principles of the TCPS are applied to research involving human subjects. REBs are responsible for ethics review of research involving humans as subjects of research. This includes research involving human remains, cadavers, tissue, biological fluids, embryos or foetuses. While quality assurance studies, performance reviews, or testing within normal educational requirements do not normally require REB review, there may be circumstances where these activities overlap with research. In such cases, the activities would be expected to undergo ethics review. REBs review research involving humans as subjects of research; they do not review research that is based exclusively on publicly available documentation. A researcher should seek the opinion of the REB should there be any doubt concerning the need for REB review of a research with or on humans.
